James Gurney has come out with an excellent new outdoor painting tutorial. The two things I liked most about it is that it takes the mystery and frustration out of the practical setup, and it builds a real enthusiasm to get out there and paint! More info and where to buy here.

Life Class Demo!

I shot steps of one of my life painting class demos for you if you're interested.
This is a quick sketch of a costumed pose in watercolor with opaque white gouache.

The Big Fix!

Lighting frame paint-over, or as I like to think of it, fighting the forces of chaos :)

We do these after the digital sets are created and lit. The first pass at lighting rarely comes out well and it's up to the artists to design the color and light for a compelling story moment in the form of a frame paint-over in photoshop.

Great news for those of us who struggle with color: everything we see can be simplified into 3 properties! 

The bad news is that these 3 simple properties combine into about 2.3 million color variations. Ugh.

Just saw the Bernini sculptures at the Galleria Borghese. That some guy can turn a block of stone into this leaves me speechless.

It's a lonely job but someone's gotta do it :)
