I have a couple of demos I'll be doing at Comic-con, stop by and say hi!
Charcoal portrait demo Saturday July 14, 2-3:30pm at the LAAFA booth, #5567
Concept art demo Saturday July 14, 4:30-5:15pm at the Schoolism booth# 2042.

Here's a step by step for those of you who can't be there:

Awesome work. It seems most of your drawings are done under a strong directional light. You use the compressed charcoal in the shadows and smudge it over to do the halftones and lights.

Since compressed charcoal is so dark it makes it difficult to model halftone and lights directly. Would you use this same technique if the model was lit more softly, like in a north light situation?

  2. Hi Anon,

I do use a similar approach for softer, more high key drawings. I get a good amount of charcoal into the darkest darks or background then use it as a pool to pull tone from for the rest.

  3. Gracias por mostrar el avance de la obra paso a paso. Un lujo.

  4. An art form is the specific shape, or quality an artistic expression takes. The media used often influence the form. For example, the form of a sculpture must exist in space in three dimensions, and respond to gravity. The constraints and limitations of a particular medium are thus called its formal qualities. To give another example, the formal qualities of oil painting are the canvas texture, color, and brush texture. The formal qualities of video games are non-linearity, interactivity and virtual presence. The form of a particular belstaff jackets outlet is determined by the formal qualities of the media, and is not related to the intentions of the artist or the reactions of the audience in any way whatsoever as these properties are related to content rather than form.

  5. Wish I could make it, sir. Hope you have a great time while there. Thanks for continually being an inspiration!

  6. Great charcoal process shown and great results.

  7. so lovely... been a long time admirer of your work. also the only issue of watercolor magazine i bought was because your work was in it. :)
